Review:
This Doctoral Thesis deals with the study of fire behaviour and temperature regime in four forest fuel complexes: "cured grasses", "cured grasses and elements of Pinus pinea litter", "Pinus pinea litter" and "Eucalyptus globulus logging slash", with which a total of 115 experimental burns were conducted in a combustion tunnel. For each fuel complex, the effects of wind speed, fuel moisture content and fuel load (in "cured grasses" and "Pinus pinea litter" fuel complexes) or type of fuel complex (in "cured grasses and elements of Pinus pinea litter" and "Eucalyptus globulus logging slash" fuel complexes) on fire behaviour were analyzed. Equations were developed in order to predict the fire behaviour parameters. Quantitative data about the temperature regime produced by fire were obtained, analyzing the height variation for each fuel complex, function of wind speed and fuel load or type of fuel complex. Comparison of fire behaviour and temperature regime produced in the selected fuel complexes was made. The fire behaviour observed in the tests was compared with the predictions supplied by the BEHAVE system, using the standard fuel models to which the complexes are assimilated, as well as the specific fuel models created by the NEWMDL program for each complex . The data obtained in this study constitute a tool to guide the planning of prevention and extinction of wildfires affecting the studied fuel complexes, as well as the selection of the most favourable conditions to conduct prescribed burning s in these complexes. In addition, these data allow to estimate some effects that fire would cause on the existing vegetation.
