The Iberian Peninsula, just because its geography, rugged terrain and peculiar soil and climate characteristics, supports a rich and varied medicinal and aromatic flora, with a high percentage of endemic species. The partial use of this flora has traditionally been sporadic and rudimentary in the two peninsular countries, Spain and Portugal. Being the main raw material supply of the consuming industries - food, pharmaceutical and cosmetics - by a series of socio-economic factors, has been phased out. The solution could be the mechanical cultivation of selected species - by their morphology, vigor and high yield-. Therefore, the INIA started research on breeding of these plants, and of suitable methods for the proper industrial processing of crops. Among other activities, they have organized the National Conferences on Medicinal and Aromatic Plants, of which seven have already been held. The present ones are the first joint conference between Spain and Portugal, held at the headquarters of INIA in Madrid from 12 to 14 July 1989. The conference consisted of four sessions: I) Agriculture and Botany, II) Chemistry and Technology III) Analysis and Quality Control, R) Applications.
