Review:

In this work we study the soils developed over a clearly delimited chalky outcrop, about 150 km in length. It has a wide validity, according to observations in other geographical areas. This work may help to facilitate the description and interpretation of thin layers and promote interest in this type of soils. It was necessary to use the micromorphology, technique able of studying original organizations in undisturbed samples. The description system of thin sections valid for soils with high gypsum content was conducted in Grignon (France). Other complementary techniques such as electron microscopy, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectroscopy have confirmed the results and allowed to study the mineralogy of certain components. The forming processes identified through this naturalistic approach permit understanding the genesis and operation of these soils. Accordingly, some suggestions are made concerning micromorphological descriptions and classification within the "Soil Taxonomy System", for a more precise description and nomenclature of chalky soils.
