Biography: Ingeniero Agrónomo por la UPM (1988) y PH.D. en Agronomía por la Universidad de Georgia (EE.UU., 1995). En 1996 se incorporó al Dpto. de Producción agraria de Universidad Publica de Navarra y en 2002 se trasladó a la UPM. En la actualidad es Profesor titular adscrito al Dpto. de Producción Vegetal: Fitotecnia y responsable del grupo de investigación AgSystems. Su carrera investigadora ha estado centrada en el estudio de balances de agua y nitrógeno en sistemas de cultivo, intentando desarrollas estrategias de manejo que permitan mantener rendimientos sostenibles y minimizar el impacto ambiental. Ha sido Adjunto del Área de Agricultura de la Agencia Nacional de Evaluación y Prospectiva durante los años 2005 y 2006.

Review:

The objective of this book is to present measurements of N balances carried out in winter cereals and corn crops in various Spanish regions. The methodology to measure the N balance is described and is applied to field experiments using various N mineral or organic fertilization rates and following different previous crops. Nitrogen balances, crop yield response to N fertilization, and N-use efficiencies are presented for the various experiments. The results show how understanding of N balances offers a sound basis by which to adjust N fertilizer application in order to optimize N management for productivity and ecological sustainability of these cropping systems. Using non-continuous models to adjust yield response to N fertilizer application, and considering soil N supply allowed optimizing N-use efficiency in most of the experiments.
