Review:

A collection of 139 accessions of lettuce (Lactuca sativa L.) from nine Spanish regions is presented, preceded by a review on the origin, domestication and diffusion of this crop. The accessions have been characterized using the IPGRI descriptor list, a special emphasis has been placed on those which make reference to the characteristics of the heart, due to its agronomical and commercial importance. These accessions have been grouped in five types: mantecosa, batavia, iceberg, romana and another type named “others”. Within each type, accessions have been classified in subtypes and groups depending on overlap and leaf bearing respectively. The characterization and classification of this collection of accessions of Lactuca sativa L., the knowledge of the origin of lettuce and relationships with relative species, are especially important for the use of these materials in lettuce breeding
