Review:
Both the importance obtained by the great resin production in Spain and the great crisis periodically recurring in spite of its first class quality impose the formation of a vast plan of industrial research with the purpose to find out new applications and to improve at the same time the processings of the derived industries. Being one of the most important problems that related to the applications of resin in the colour and varnish industry, this work discusses the problem referring to oxidated resins and especially to the preparation of the tetra-hydroxide-abietic acid the proprieties of which, such as high melting point, solubility in alcohol, stability in air and light etc., offer great possibilities to correct the defects and drawbacks of softening, formation of whitish films, alternability of colour etc., which we find in colours and varnishes prepared with unmodified resins. The 1st part of this work exposes in general terms all referring to the constitution, proprieties and transformation of the Spanish resins related to the modern colour and varnish industry. The 2nd part offers a complete bibliographic study of the methods so far employed in the oxidation both of resin and abietic acid. The 3rd part, the experimental part, comprises: (a) the application of a new method to the oxidation of the abietic acid with sodium hypochlorite; (b) the potentiometric study of the reaction between the sodium hypochlorite and the abietic acid permitting to fix the experimental conditions for a quantitative reaction: analysis of the resulting product; (c) the saponification of the dichlor-dihydroxy abietic acid, its problems, and proprieties of the derived products.
