Review:

The introduction of this book includes a review on the economic importance, taxonomy, related species, the “eggplant complex”, subspecies and botanical varieties, the origin, domestication, diffusion, composition and uses of this crop. Following that, the descriptors used, including data on the origin and plant and fruit characters, are described. The following section is devoted to the structure of the seeds collection; here, the types established, number of accessions and codes used are considered. The fourth section presents the collection divided in types (according to fruit shape), subtypes (according to fruit colour at commercial ripeness) and groups (according to fruit colour at commercial ripeness). Data on each accession are presented in tables with information on the origin, local name and plant and fruit characteristics. A colour photograph of fruits at commercial ripeness is included for each accession. In total, 76 accesions, of which 68 are Spanish landraces are included.
