Review:
We present the main botanical characteristics of wild vines, their historic contribution to human nutrition and development of cultivated breeds. The location of populations prospected by the research team in Spain is also presented, with their principal ecological characteristics and health status, and a comprehensive ampelographic description of a vine of each gender. Finally the need to conserve the wild vines in the wild and in gene banks is discussed.
