Review:
The levels defined for many pomological characteristics included in the UPOV guidelines are not always defined with enough detail, or they are associated to reference varieties which are extremely rare and hard to obtain. For that reason, the descriptions made in the apple field collections are sometimes subjective and hard to compare. The method includes 63 characteristics in which 56 are included in the UPOV test guidelines issued in 2005 (TG/14/9). The levels have been defined using the characterization data already available for 1,350 accessions preserved in the six major apple germplasm collections of the Network of Collections of the Spanish National Programme for Plant Genetic Resources. On the 24 characteristics that could be quantified using a continous scale (quantitative), the number and thresholds for the levels were defined using: i) the value of the percentile 50 for the accessions with recorded data, ii) the mean value of the difference between the highest and lowest values observed within each accession, and iii) the variability of the latter among accessions. The number of levels in the remaining 39 characteristics that cannot be measured using a continuous scale (qualitative) was determined according to what, in the experience of the authors, was possible to differentiate in the Spanish accessions. In contrast to the UPOV guidelines, the levels are not defined by comparison with reference cultivars, but with distinctive photographs depicting unambiguously the level. In all cases the levels defined using our methodology are compared with their counterparts defined in TG/14/09.
