Thinning experiences were carried out in Scots pine stands in the Iberian and Central ranges. The study is based on data from 105 permanent plots. Experiments were established in natural and artificial regeneration stands, covering different ages (from 20 to 75 years) and site indexes. Effects of thinning treatments on stands are studied and compared with a control treatment. The more important aspects studied in this thinning experience are the effects of thinning intensities on stand yield, tree size and stand structure. Different thinning indices have been studied in order to describe thinning regimes.
A Parameter Recovery Model (PMR) method was used to develop a growth model based on diameter distributions for thinned and non-thinned Scots pine stands. In this model, the used probability density function was the three-parameters Weibull function, with parameters estimated by the algorithm proposed by Burk and Burkhart (1984) based on the moments method. The growth model predicts in an efficient manner the stand development and structure for non-thinned stands, and provides better estimates for thinned stands.
