Review:
A collection of 27 accessions of cabbage (Brassica oleracea conv. Capitata L.) from six Spanish regions is presented. In addition, a brief review of the origin, domestication and diffusion of this crop is included. Among these descriptors, special emphasis was placed on those related to the characteristics of the heart, due to its agronomic and commercial importance. All accessions have been grouped in three types: white cabbage, savoy cabbage, and red cabbage. Within each type, accessions were classified in subtypes, groups and subgroups depending on leaf curling, overlap and colour, respectively. The characterization and classification of this collection of accessions of Brassica oleracea conv. Capitata L., the knowledge of the origin of cabbage, and its relationship with related species, are specially important for the use of these materials in cabbage breeding.
