The author made a taxonomic revision of the genus Chondrostoma Agassiz. 1835 (Pisces, Cyprinidae), widely distributed in the freshwaters of Europe and the Middle East. A total of 6887 preserved specimens of the genus from 91 river basins, pertaining to European, Asian and American collections, were examined. In addition, comparative material including 372 specimens of the genera Abramis, Acrocheilus and Rutilus were used. Likewise, skeletons of eleven taxa of Chondrostoma and seven related genera were studied
