On the occasion of the inauguration of the first Spanish germplasm bank, the author prepared this work whose objectives are: To show the importance of plant genetic resources as natural resources for obtaining new varieties of plants, to warn about the growing erosion of these resources and the need to safeguard what remains, present a classification of plant genetic resources oriented to their practical use and provide basic information on the collection, conservation, evaluation, documentation and exchange of plant genetic resources.
