This paper describes the structure of dairy farming in Cantabria from 1980 - 1990, in particular, information obtained from farmers declarations of milk production. The data permit Cantabria´s milk production industry to be set in its Spanish and European context and lead to the conclusion that Cantabrian milk producers are both well placed and willing to adopt EEC programmes for the abandonment and suspension of milk production. Consequently, it is felt that there exists a great potencial for the cessation of milk production in this region
