Review:

The importance of the application of certain chemical products to stimulate the resin flow of the different pine species, induced us to study it first on Pinus pinaster to extend later these investigations to P. halepensis and P. laricio, species which are also turpentined in Spain. The objective of this work was to study, in general lines, turpentining with acid treatment, to discuss the works done in different countries, and to detail the experiences done in Spain. The work is divided in three parts: i) the invention of turpentining with acid treatment in Germany, the remarkable development this method has taken in America and the present state of this application in European countries; we expose the theory of the reaction of these chemical agents which requires for a better understanding a previous analysis of the fundamental facts of turpentining; ii) we indicate the most important factors intervening in the experiments of acid treatment and give a general plan of experiments applied to Spanish pine woods; iii) the study of turpentining P. pinaster with HCl; the continuous treatment of Hugues normal chipping with 20% HCl applied during 75-80% of the season gives a yield of 19-20%; a continuous treatment of Hugues high chipping with 30-40% HCl during 65% of the season yields 25-27%; the skipping treatment of Hugues normal chipping with 30% HCl during 80% of the season yields 18-19%.
