Review:

This work includes the development and results of experiments carried out by the IFIE (Instituto Forestal de Investigaciones y Experiencias) in order to determine the most suitable resin extraction system for extracting oleoresins of Pinus pinea L., as the turpentine of this species is composed almost entirely (93%) of limonene, interesting application of feedstock primarily in pharmacy and perfumery. It is concluded from the study that the ideal system for the pine resin tapping is the herringbone with Mazek brush stimulated with sulfuric acid in concentrations ranging between 40% and 60%. Although unitary yields obtained are low, the masses of P. pinea may constitute a potential reserve of limonene, and under certain circumstances may make it advisable to industrial exploitation.
